The Project for Improvement of the Primary Schools in Cameroon (Phase Ⅴ)

Background

Japan has provided Grant Aid to Cameroon for 1,331 classrooms in 101 sites in 9 out of 10 provinces through the phase Ⅰ-Ⅳ of elementary school construction program since 1997. However, the country still has a shortage of about 17,600 classrooms, and also 15,159 classrooms that need to be rebuilt. Especially in the Northwest Province, where grant aid has not been provided so far, the development of public elementary schools has been delayed due to political reasons. Besides, the low enrollment rate and the poor condition of facilities has been conspicuous. The Northwest Province was included in the initial request for Phase Ⅳ but was excluded from the survey phase. Thus, the government of Cameroon requested Grant Aid for the construction of an elementary school in the Northwest province at Phase Ⅴ.

Project description

This project was implemented as a community-based development grant aid by utilizing local contractors, and 190 classrooms in 29 schools were constructed. Except for a few sites in urban areas where land is limited, all facilities are designed a simple single-story building. local materials and construction methods were adopted to enable maintenance by the community such as school council.
