The Project for the Teacher Training School at Chimoio

Background

While the primary education sector in Mozambique has been expanding its educational opportunities as indicated by the number of students and the total enrollment rate, internal efficiencies such as retention and dropout rates have remained low, and improving the quality of education has become a major challenge. At the same time, the rapidly increasing number of students was putting pressure on the teacher staffing situation, which tended to be in short supply, pushing up the number of students per teacher. In order to compensate for the shortage of teachers, unqualified teachers continued to be hired, and the percentage of qualified teachers declined year by year, leading to a decline in the quality of primary education. In response to this situation, the government has positioned the improvement of the teacher training system as a priority issue, and with the support of donors and other organizations, has been developing elementary teacher training schools (IMAPs) in eight provinces and one city nationwide. Among the remaining two provinces, the government requested Japan to provide grant assistance for the construction of an IMAP in Manica.

Project description

The IMAP will be a boarding school with five classes and two grades and 400 students according to the establishment concept. The facilities consist of an administration/teaching building, a regular classroom building, a special classroom/library building, a music hall, a technical training building, a gymnasium, a cafeteria/kitchen, a service building, a dormitory, a teacher's residence, a latrine building, and an elementary school for practical training. The main buildings have a common span of 2.8m and a single-flowing roof with steel sheets on steel beams to achieve design unity. The pillars are placed on the exterior walls, and vertical louvers are installed on the north side openings to prevent sunlight from penetrating the building.
